Less Impact. More Garamond.

16_mattrobinsonstage1

There are many choices we make each day that appear to be benign. In truth, though, many have negative impacts on our global environment. Take for instance, your choice of typeface. When printing a regular office document do you consider the ink consumption of the your chosen typeface? And have you considered the impact of choosing a blatant ink-hog font like an Ultra-Bold Extended will have on the environment our childrens’ children inherit? I haven’t. And I bet you haven’t either. Why would you? The impact happens at such a small scale that it is invisible to us.

Someone has thought about this though—Matt Robinson. And he created a startlingly simple way of amplifying our everyday font choices so that we can clearly see the impact they make.

Take a look at Matt’s project Measuring Type on his site www.matthewrobinson.co.uk

So Long, Erin.

woman-top of world

Today was the last day for our wonderful designer Erin Leonard. She’s packing up and heading back to New Hampshire. Erin has been with Hero for three years and we’ll miss her dearly. But never fear, she’s promised to write Part 2 of her blog post Lessons From a Type Geek which so many people liked. I’m sure we’ll find her working at some boutique agency in Boston very soon.

If you want to reach her, email to erinaleonard@gmail.com

So long. Good luck. We’ll miss you.

Hero Needs An Intern or Two.

Hero Needs An Intern

Hero Design Studio is in need of an intern or two. We are a classic design studio focused on executing smart ideas. We’re interested in web designers and graphic designers who want to learn how to produce, print and build the ideas they dream up. We’ll teach you studio process, project management and all that goes into delivering great work. Along the way you’ll get plenty of opportunities to design and see your work come to life.

Term: Feb – May, 2010

Positions: Web Designer, Graphic Deisgner

Schedule: More than part-time

Pay: None

Clothing: Recommended

Location: Our place, not yours

Instructions:

Just like on the playground, picking the right people for your team is important. So in 100 words, or less, tell us about yourself. We want to know why you’d like to intern for Hero, what skills you have to offer and what you hope to get out of your internship. Points are awarded for creativity and candor. Deductions are made for empty platitudes and unsubstantiated claims of game changing greatness.

Send your 100 words, or less, back to us along with a resumé and PDF portfolio or link to your site.

Seth Godin’s blog is one of my favorite daily reads. Today he writes about the client’s role in the creative process. It’s a great list of dos, don’ts and straight talk about fostering innovation and leading a creative team to success. At Hero, helping clients become more informed marketers is one of our goals. Seth’s post, How to be a great client, is full of  insights every client will find useful.

Read all about it here.
