A big driver of cultural evolution of the past 10 years has been the democratization of web technology. Though not everyone is capable of creating an innovation or new programming language, most are capable of using one. And this tidal wave of users has pushed innovation even further. Resources like http://www.codecademy.com/ and even books like "Twitter for Dummies" puts the power of these tools into everyone's hands.

I imagine the same thing will happen with materials science. One thing that will limit 3D printing will be materials. It's nice to think I'll be able to print a new tail-light for my car but without the right material in my printer it won't be possible. A tidal wave of users would change this. As 3D printing finds its core applications, materials will be created to serve the need. As we see the democratization and personalization of manufacturing, we may also see molecular and nano material development equally dispersed.
